A September to Remember

Normally, I write these posts as things happen, so I work on them through the course of the month. This month, we've been so busy that I haven't done that. With that said, I am trying to look at pictures in my phone, old appointment schedules, and texts to remember what all Beckett has had going on.

Following his OT evaluation last month, we have started going to OT twice/week. After the first session, I was in awe of just how much work he was able to get done in his 30 minute session that I came home and told Regan he should be getting PT from them as well. They worked for the whole 30 minutes, and Beckett was exhausted by the end. That's the way it should be! Comparatively, with PT comes to our house (through ECI), we don't really get that much work in. There's a lot of catching up, keeping Lincoln entertained, and some work with Beckett mixed in. I think his therapist through ECI has shown me some good things to work on with him, but since they take a more parent taught approach rather than hands on, I honestly just don't have enough time in the day to spend working with Beckett on what she shows me. Going to therapy and having them work hands on with him has already shown to be working for him.

With that said, I requested an evaluation with PT, which we had this month as well. The therapist completed her evaluation, and agreed that he definitely qualifies for PT, so he is getting PT twice/week as well. We work on similar things with her, but as he gets a little older, we will start to stray from what OT does and work on more of his "big" skills (crawling, walking, etc) as long as he is continuing to progress.

If that wasn't enough, we also had a speech evaluation, which he *shocker* qualifies for. He is receiving speech therapy once/week. You may be asking yourself "umm speech? he's a baby and doesn't talk..?" and you'd be right. We are working on strengthening his mouth muscles, and training his tongue to move properly in his mouth. Right now, he's got a tongue thrust, which means he pushes his tongue out of his mouth a lot while he's eating. It's fine for now while he's eating purees, but as he starts eating more solid foods, he's going to need to be using his tongue differently and that's what his therapist is helping him work on in his sessions.

Our pediatrician put in a request for a swallow study be completed at the hospital, which makes me incredibly nervous. He has not had an issues with nursing, or eating any of the food I have made for him yet, and some of the food is pretty thick! He'll be doing that next month, just to see if there is anything going on internally that we can't see, and to give his speech therapist peace of mind as she works with him. It's not a requirement for him to have speech therapy but definitely something they like to have done when working with kids with potential feeding issues.

This month I had to break up with ECI. Since he is getting PT once/week through them, and they are parent taught, I just feel like it's not going to be the best use of their time with Beckett. He's getting so much therapy at Elite, and they are so hands on with him. We are also going to Elite everyday of the week except Wednesday, which leaves me with one day that I can actually go out and run errands in the morning. Therefore, we have decided to cancel our services through ECI. ECI is a service that only goes up until the age of 3, and while it is convenient for them to come to the house, Beckett is getting more through Elite. I feel bad breaking up with them, but I have to do what's best for Beckett, so we will continue with our OT/PT/Speech plan with Elite.

After all that being done this month, we then went to Houston for Becketts baptism, and a family wedding. Like this blog post is titled, it was a September to remember!

Ketchup

Lots of things have changed in the last 6 months! We left our therapy clinic and it was heartbreaking. All our therapists in Washington have been monumental in Beckett's journey and there's no way he would be where he is today without them. We left all our neighbors on Dakota Ave that turned our time there into the most memorable of our military time. We packed up our house, and headed home to Texas! The first six weeks being in Texas were a whirlwind between airbnbs, hotels, families houses, while trying to find a house to buy, and Regan starting his job. So during that time I didn't try to accomplish anything for Beckett beyond getting both boys established with a pediatrician. Most of the other doctors Beckett needed to get into had to be sent referrals by his pediatrician anyway, so that was the best place to start. Their pediatrician is very sweet, but we've had a few hiccups with her office and their knowledge of Beckett's diagnoses which has been quite shocki...

Three-esta

In November, we had Beckett's Special Education evaluation. It was quite a crowd. In addition to me and Beckett, there was the Diagnostician, a Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, 2 Speech Language Pathologists, 2 Vision Teachers, and a Teacher for the Deaf. Prior to this meeting, we were sent questionnaires to fill out regarding Beckett's development so they had some sort of idea about what where he was at when they did get to meet him.  After their introductions, all the specialists observed Beckett's movements, and interactions, while they all took turns asking questions about his development that were specific to their individual evaluations. I answered what felt like never ending questions while they all fawned over Beckett, and they sent us on our way. As the diagnostician was walking us out, I had a little check in the see if she thought he would qualify for Special Education services. She was nodding yes, as she made sure to tell me she'd let me know onc...

NAPA Knows How

Our time at the NAPA Center was truly incredible. I had seen online a handful of accounts I follow of kids doing intensive therapy, and I was definitely intrigued but I wasn't sure where to turn. A fellow Liss mom had mentioned the NAPA center so I went to Google to do my research. At the time, registration had closed to get into an intensive session for 2023, so we were waitlisted, which was totally fine since we were still in Washington and getting to a session wasn't really feasible at the time. When registration for 2024 opened up, I applied, and waited to hear. A few weeks later I got the email that he was selected to attend an intensive session in Austin the summer we arrived back in Texas, which couldn't have worked out better.  We figured out how we were going to make it happen between work, school, and getting settled into our new house. One of my college roommates that is still a dear friend lives in Austin, conveniently about 20 minutes from the Napa center, and ...
